Our university is getting its first pilot meadow between the Laser Institute and the Center for Media and Social Work - the starting shot will be given in the first quarter of 2022!
The decline in the biodiversity of insects and birds, as well as the loss of biodiversity in the plant world, is now clearly noticeable. A large proportion of the open spaces in cities, but above all in industrial agriculture, offer little ecological diversity due to the species-poor lawns represented. They were made with regular seed mixtures consisting of 3 to 7 types of assertive grasses. These areas hardly offer a source of food for insects and other small animals and therefore only little living space. Regular pruning exacerbates the problem. Insects and small animals are killed by the mulch mowing care technology used. The conversion to herb-rich meadows and herb lawns with a biodiversity of up to 40 different species is possible and useful almost everywhere - so let's do it!
On the initiative of the Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien und Baumanagement (SIB) and the climate protection management, the first pilot meadow between the laser institute and the center for media and social work is being built on the campus of the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. This reallocation of approx. 3,000 square meters can create a diverse living space in a relatively simple manner, which can also react much more robustly with regard to hotter, drier summers.
